The Oil Cleansing Method

Folks that suffer from skin imperfections.. acne, dark spots, age spots, wrinkles and anything else related to your skin and face listen up!.... I have some news that may come as surprising to those avid "face washers" out there. STOP! The beauty industry has us believing that we need to rid our face of oil with harsh chemical face washes and all kinds of lotions and potions, when it reality we are only causing more harm than good.

Being an avid "Pinterest" follower and user I came across a method called the "Oil Cleansing Method" and decided to give it a go. It has worked WONDERS for my skin, and I am here to share it with you...

The reasons we have so much trouble with mainstream skin care products are numerous, but two reasons, in particular, lead the pack. These products strip the oil out of our skin, leaving our largest organ trying to repair itself by replacing the oil stripped away. This leaves us in a cycle of being tight and dry followed by the inevitable oil slick. Each time we strip the oil away, our skin over-compensates for the lack of moisture by creating more oil. On top of the drying effects, these products are highly-scented. Fragrance is one of the top skin irritants and strangely enough, even the so-called "unscented" products usually contain fragrance. See for yourself and check the labels.

Do not be afraid of applying oil to your face. Oil, alone, will not bring you blemishes. Pimples, cysts, zits, blackheads, whiteheads...these are a result of several different factors including hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells and the buildup of these factors. Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it. It is not a malicious force to be reckoned with; it is there for the benefit of your skin, allowing your largest organ to function properly. It is naturally occurring. Not only does your natural oil help lubricate, it also heals, protects, and moisturizes your skin so that it may function properly. Properly functioning skin is beautiful, clear, and glowing. Learning to work with your skin, not against it, will save you tremendously.

We will need two oils. The first, and most importantly, is Castor Oil. If you don't have this medicine cabinet staple already, it can be found online at www.gethealthypa.com or in our Get Healthy Richboro location. Castor Oil has potent anti-inflammatory properties, but is also healing and cleansing, which is why we're focusing on this oil as our primary oil. Castor Oil has been the focus of many books and medical discussion because of its seemingly "magical" healing properties. As quoted in The Oil That Heals by Dr. McGarey, he states, "Castor oil will leave the body in better condition than it found it." Though it may be our most important oil, we won't be using it in the amounts that we will the other oil (or combination of oils for those who want to take this a step further). A little bit of Castor Oil goes a long way and too much will leave you, surprisingly, with dry skin.

Since Castor Oil is so thick and its cleansing properties so strong, we need to dilute it with another oil, thinner in consistency, but no less nurturing to the skin. Sunflower Seed Oil has become my personal favorite, though in the past, I've suggested Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Both are wonderfully caring oils for skin application, but I've found that Sunflower Seed Oil has a more luxurious feel for massage. It sinks into the skin better, aiding the castor oil in transportation deep into the pores and allowing it to draw the dirt and grime to the surface of your skin where it can be wiped away. The essential fatty acids, though they are not naturally occurring in the body, are a necessity for the health of our cell membranes. These acids help restore the skins natural moisture balance and help prevent unnecessary dryness. The secondary oil that you choose is entirely up to you and should be determined by your skins needs and the properties of that oil. Choose from natural, cold-pressed vegetable oils, as these have nutrients, vitamins, and fatty acids that mineral oil and other refined oils don't. You may even have these oils in your kitchen, as they're used for cooking, as well! For the sake of explanation, from this point on, we'll say "Sunflower Seed Oil" in place of "Secondary Oil." Remember that Sunflower Seed Oil may be replaced by your vegetable oil of choice.

The Oil Cleansing Method
(as per Pinterest)
First and foremost, this is typically done in the evening, prior to bed. There should be no need for deep cleansing in the morning if you're waking up with skin cleansed the night before. In the morning, a quick wipe with a warm washcloth should suffice. We don't want to over cleanse our skin as this will serve only to irritate and cause more oil production. The objective of using this method is to deep clean while balancing our skins oil production at the same time.
  • You'll need a soft washcloth, your oil blend, and hot, running water.
  • Pour a generous puddle of oil into the palm of your hand. Roughly, the size of a quarter, but more is acceptable. Rub your hands together to warm the oil and smooth over your face.
  • Begin massaging the oil into your face. This will remove makeup, dirt, and other impurities, so there is no need to use a makeup remover or wash your face prior to the massage. I've found that this removes even my stubborn waterproof mascara.
  • Using slow, firm motions across the skin, massage the oil deeply into your pores. Take your time and focus on your problem areas. You want the oil to work into your pores so that blackheads and the like can be dissolved and steamed away.
  • As you're massaging, let your mind drift off to something calming and breathe deeply. Take this time to relax and release some of the stress that your body is harboring. Sit down, breathe deeply, and take your time. Give the oil enough time to work on dissolving the impurities in your pores and give yourself enough time to unwind. Picture what your face would look like if it were completely clear and free from blemishes. Focus on that image and know that it is attainable. Trust that it is attainable. Accept that it is attainable. You can have clear skin, free of blemishes and you will have clear skin, free of blemishes. Focus on perfect skin and breathe deeply.
  • Once you're satisfied that your pores are saturated and you're feeling calm, pick up your washcloth and soak it in clean, steamy water. We want the water to be warm enough to open your pores and remove the oil. Cool water will not open your pores, nor will it remove the oil efficiently. We're not scalding our skin, we're steaming to coax our pores to release the oil carrying the impurities. We're essentially steaming our skin as an esthetician would, but without the luxury of a steam machine.
  • Hold the washcloth to cover your face. Allow it to stay until it cools. You will feel your pores releasing the impurities. Wipe the oil gently away and rinse the washcloth well in hot, running water. Hold the washcloth to your face again, allowing it to cool. Wipe gently, rinse well, and repeat two or three more times. Avoid any temptation to scrub, as you'll find it's completely unnecessary and your skin will be soft, smooth, and free of flakes without the additional manual exfoliation and irritation that will result. Impurities, dead skin cells, and bacteria will be gently swept away.
  • Have no fear of the oil, as the steamy washcloth will remove it. The Castor Oil, though it is an oil, will help with the removal of the other oils, as well. It is our main cleansing oil and is easily removed with warm water.
  • If your skin feels tight, take a tiny drop of your oil blend, rub it between your clean, damp palms and pat it onto your damp skin. Gently massage any oil residue into your skin so there is no film of oil left sitting on the surface. Your skin should now glow!

Vitamins For Your Fluffy Friends

“Organic vitamins for your dog are some of the best ways to keep your pet happy and healthy for many years. Although many dog foods contain a good mixture of different nutrients to support your pet's health, others do not. Additionally, factors may play into the loss of nutrients from prepared dog food, making it not as healthy as it would be otherwise for your pet. Therefore, it's a good idea to work with your vet to come up with a general plan of how to ensure that your dog gets all of the necessary nutrients that he needs for proper bodily functions and health. Organic vitamins are one of the best ways to achieve these goals.” VETINFO

If you have ever stopped in the store then you surely have met Nugget, or as we like to call her, “The Get Healthy Guard Dog”. Although, she really does not do much of any “guarding”… most likely she will lick you to death :P

Either way, we pride ourselves in our dog and keeping her as healthy as possible. She is currently on a daily regimen of organic dog food and a healthy dose of doggie pro-biotics (to help with digestion). These pro-biotics by the brand Natren can be found in our refrigerated section of the store.

To keep up with her grooming needs we bathe her every Sunday in organic shampoo and conditioner that, believe it or not, is meant for humans :) She gets spoiled with Arbonne’s FC5 daily shampoo and conditioner and sometimes even gets a Coconut Oil leave in treatment to make her coat nice and shiny (all products can be found in store and online at www.GetHealthyPA.com). ***Did you know that Coconut Oil also relives dry itchy skin for dogs…yes, dogs get dry skin as well in those winter months.

Some believe dogs receive enough vitamins as part of their well-balanced pet food… but is the pet food you are buying really THAT nutritious or does it contain a lot of filler?! I encourage you to READ YOUR LABELS, even when it comes to your four legged friends. As it turns out, for most dogs and cats out there the drug store pet food is simply not enough. One has to spend a pretty penny on those high-end brands such as Wellness to really receive proper nutrition for their pet… but I am a firm believer that your pet is worth it!
Good Organic Vitamins for Your Pet
With that being said, Vitamins B5 and niacin are the two nutrients that your pet will likely require the most of. Even a minute amount of these vitamins will be sufficient to support most dogs. Beware when you're planning on a type of vitamin supplement to give to your dog, because some vitamins can build up in your pet's system and may cause him some health problems. Fat-soluble vitamins, including Vitamin A, D, E and K are all potentially HARMFUL to your dog's body. In fact, if you give your pet too much of these vitamins they can actually become toxic and even fatal. Other vitamins, like vitamin B, niacin, riboflavin and others, will not cause your pet any of these potential problems because they are water-soluble. The excess vitamin material will be flushed out of your dog's body.
So keep your 4-legged friends as healthy as you would yourself… after all, they are your best friend.

DeSaro Chiropractic Center Review

Located in Richboro, PA the DeSaro Chiropractic Center is not only a "must visit" spot for those experiencing back pain and/or neck pain but also to deal with various other general health issues. Did you know that a chiropractic adjustment can boost your immune system by 400%??? Well, neither did I until Amy Cons (Office Manager at DeSaro Chiropractic Center) informed me of such. "What a difference an adjustment would make for those that are constantly sick."

Visiting a chiropractor can help you deal with a number of conditions. In some cases, a visit to the chiropractor can take away the need for painkillers or at least reduce it. According to Chirobase, an online guide to the history, theories and practices of chiropractics, a number of randomized controlled trial, or RCT, have shown the many benefits for those with spinal issues. According to Chirobase, a number of RCT have shown that patients who use chiropractic care to treat lower back pain have a 34 percent higher improvement in recovery over those who use other methods.

Neck pain is second only to lower back pain as a reason for visiting a chiropractor, reports Chirobase. Fewer studies have been conducted on the efficacy of manipulation and mobilization to treat neck pain. A 1996 study published in the British Medical Journal showed that people who were treated by a chiropractor showed more improvement than those who used a different type of therapy. Headaches that are related to tension or neck pain also can be helped with chiropractic care. According to Arn Strasser, a chiropractor and writer for Spine Universe, chiropractors can treat a number of conditions associated with neck pain, including joint injuries and strained muscles, but they will refer more serious problems, such as fractures, to the appropriate doctor.

According to Chirobase, chiropractic care has been used to treat a number of conditions not connected to the musculoskeletal systems. This includes hypertension, dizziness/vertigo and chronic pelvic pain. Results are mixed. The University of Maryland Medical Center points out that the following conditions are often treated through chiropractic care: digestive problems, fatigue, premenstrual pain and asthma.

According to the DeSaro Center, "Chiropractic is about performance."
Keep your high performance vehicle in tip-top shape instead of chasing symptoms. Get in for regular “tune-ups.”
Dr. Andrew DeSaro specializes in chiropractic for prenatal and pediatrics patients and Dr. Kristi DeSaro specializes in performance enhancement for the athlete.
Visit their Center today at 95 Almshouse Road Suite 304 in Richboro, PA 18954 and tell them Get Healthy sent you. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Benefits of the Holistic Lifestyle

Unlike traditional medicine, which focuses on illness or specific parts of the body, holistic medicine considers the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. This approach also looks at how each individual interacts with their environment, believing that we are not separate from our surroundings. Holistic alternative medicine encompasses a wide array of time proven treatments that include, but are not limited to, acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, chiropractic, homeopathy, and reflexology. Holistic medicine also incorporates traditional medical tests and treatments where appropriate. In holistic health, each individual is an active participant in their treatment and takes responsibility for the daily choices that contribute to—or detract from—their level of health.

A holistic lifestyle will vary according to each individual’s medical condition(s), stresses and available social support. In holistic health, it is assumed that each individual, regardless of their state of health or disease, can improve their state of well-being through healthy lifestyle choices. A proper diet provides the essential nutrients, or building blocks, to create new healthier cells (the body continuously replaces cells); reducing harmful substances including alcohol, nicotine, and drugs, reduces stress on the body’s systems; the right exercise improves mood, energy levels, and flexibility; and cultivating positive mental attitudes and eliminating negative messages from people, media, and entertainment promotes self esteem.

The Benefits of Holistic Medicine
Focusing on the whole person, including the individual as a partner in improving health, cultivating a positive lifestyle, and using an array of alternative and sometimes allopathic modalities as appropriate promotes greater vitality and well-being and also naturally motivates each individual to continue towards a greater state of health.

What every Body needs

Quality Soaps Explained:
 dr bronner's soaps
Soaps have been made for millennia. Aside from making fire and cooking food, "saponifying" oil and fat into soap is one of the oldest and simplest chemical reactions known to humankind. In fact, the first soaps were accidentally made by fat dripping into the ashes of cooking fires.
Soap is made by saponifying a fat or oil with an alkali. A fat or oil is a "triglyceride," which means that three fatty acids of various carbon lengths are attached to a glycerine backbone. The alkali is either sodium (for bars) or potassium (for liquids) hydroxide, made by running electricity through salt water.
The saponification process is a simple one-step reaction with no waste generated: the glycerine is split off from the fatty acids, and the fatty acids combine with the sodium or potassium to form soap, while the hydroxide forms water. The result is soap, glycerin and water (no alkali remains in our soaps).
Quality soap-making consists in great part of choosing the right proportions of the right oils with their different fatty acids. Most commercial soap manufacturers skimp on quality because of cost and use lots of tallow from beef fat with a little bit of coconut or palm kernel oil.
Dr. Bronner's unsurpassed soaps are made with certified organic olive, hemp and palm oils instead of tallow, and contain three times more organic coconut oil than commercial soaps. Saponified coconut oil generates high-lather cleansing even in hard water because it has shorter-chain saturated fatty acids. Hemp, olive and palm oil-based soaps make a mild, smooth, creamy lather because these oils contain longer-chain unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fatty acids.

Other Ways Dr. Bronner's Makes Higher-Quality Soap

  • Unlike most commercial soap-makers who distill the glycerin out of their soaps to sell separately, Dr. Bronner's retains it in their soaps for its superb moisturizing qualities.
  • We superfat our soaps with organic hemp and jojoba oils for a milder, smoother lather.
  • We use natural plant-derived vitamin E and citric acid to protect freshness.
  • We do not add any chelating agents, dyes, whiteners or synthetic fragrances.
  • We use pure and powerful high-quality certified organic essential oils.
  • Our liquid soaps are 3 times more concentrated than most so-called "liquid soaps" on the market, and are only a few percent away from being a solid, which ecologically saves on packaging materials.
  • Our new plastic cylinder bottles are made from 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.
  • Our soaps are a superb value, costing less than less-concentrated, inferior detergent body-wash "liquid soaps."
  • Our soaps are most popular for at-home washing, but they also are the soap of choice for many campers and hikers, as they are so biodegradable and nature-friendly.

The Aluminum Free lifestyle

In today's age there is a lot of talk of what is good for the body and what is bad. Going by your product labels alone may not always be the best decision. Slogans such as "good for your skin" and "healthy" are not the whole truth.

One major product that is used by everyone that wants to stay fresh throughout the day, may be slowly deteriorating your body and cells: and the winner is.... Deodorant.

Most deodorants on the shelves contains aluminum.

Aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer's disease, according to a 1997 study by the Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases at the University of Toronto in Canada. The body, through the pores in the underarms, readily absorbs aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium used in deodorants. Aluminum-free deodorants offer a variety of health benefits and choices in natural ingredients.

Reduced Risk of Brain Metabolic Disorders
Aluminum from deodorants is easily absorbed by the body, according to a 2001 study published in "Food and Chemical Toxicology." Aluminum slowly accumulates in the cell nucleus and chromatin. Neurons in the brain are the most effected by this accumulation, according to a 1986 study by P.O. Ganrot in "Environmental Health Perspectives." Aluminum accumulation occurs at the subcellular level without measurable increases in tissue concentration. The uptake is slow and damages the cells over time contributing to age related diseases and other neurological disorders.

Aluminum is considered a known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), according to the National Institutes of Health. A two-year study of 63 patients concluded that aluminum plays an active role in the pathogenesis of AD.

Clear Underarm Pores
Deodorant manufacturers use aluminum compounds to reduce perspiration. Aluminum forms a temporary plug in the sweat duct that stops sweat from reaching the skin's surface. This clogs the pores in the underarms and can cause allergic contact dermatitis, according to a study published in the January 2010 issue of "Contact Dermatitis."

Reduced Risk of Breast Cancer
Using deodorants that contain aluminum may contribute to breast cancer development, according to the National Cancer Institute. No conclusive evidence links aluminum-containing deodorants to causing breast cancer, but aluminum-based compounds that are applied frequently to skin near the breast may be absorbed into the skin and cause "estrogen-like" hormonal effects. Estrogen can promote breast cancer cells; it is possible, then, that these compounds also contribute to breast cancer.

Odor Protection
Natural deodorants that do not contain aluminum compounds can help reduce odor from sweating. Ingredients like sage oil, lemon, citrus and rose are effective at masking body odor. Crystal deodorants absorb odors--but be sure to read the labels as some crystal deodorants have been found to have trace amounts of aluminum.

"The Health of your Body; shows up in your Hair"

This week's topic is all about your hair. Ladies, I know it is your pride and joy and a major cause of low self esteem if it is not up to par... I am here to change all that today. Why? Because I care a lot about what my own hair looks like, and have become more aware of just how harmful certain products are and that actually cause "killer strands".

You may have heard all this uproar about Sulfate Free shampoos, and guess what, all the hype is true... and I am here to tell you why.

"The health of your body ... shows up in your hair" Or in other words, if your hair is thin, lifeless, shedding... please also rule out a serious illness that could be a cause of the problem. Rarely is that a sign of something serious but you can never be too sure. If illness is not the case start taking a look at your ingredients in your shampoo and in all your beauty products (especially anything that suds). More often than not, you are actually using harmful chemicals that are doing more damage than good.

The one and only shampoos you should use are those labeled Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - Free or SLS free, and also ALS free. Period.

SLS is a surfactant. What that means in layman's terms is that there is a cleaning agent in any beauty product called the "surfactant". The surfactant in shampoos are surface active ingredients, meaning they can interact with a surface. The chemical nature of a surfactant allows it to surround and trap oily materials from surfaces. For the past 20+ years almost every shampoo has used Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) as their surfactant. Why? Because they are SUPER cheap and make lots and lots of foam and bubbles.

Funny that lather, foam and bubble amount tells absolutely nothing about whether you are using a good or bad shampoo, but most often these get the most attention. So let that one go - please. If you are experiencing lots of lather in your shampoos it is actually a sign that you used too MUCH of the product. We all see the hair commercials on TV with lots of happy people washing their hair and producing lots of lather... advertising and marketing has made the public associate lather and foam with cleansing ability. It's sad but true. I used to be guilty of this too, thinking that if my shampoo was not foaming enough it must mean it is not cleaning my hair and therefore I need to use more. WRONG!

There are many  manufacturers that use the same SLS found in shampoos as garage cleaners, engine degreasers, oven cleaners, and the list goes on and on. The last place these ingredients should be is in your hair.... even less your skin. They have been known to cause thinning of hair, drying out hair, loss of hair, loss of color, etc. So please, do me a favor, buy Sulfate free. It's the healthy way to go. Do it for yourself and reap the benefits :)

Get Healthy offers many types of shampoos that offer any hair type some solace, and ALL are sulfate free and good for you. Here are just a few of our brands:
PURE Life Soap Co. has many different scents to choose from and not to mention are all natural.

Cutting Carbon - Delivering Value

What exactly is a carbon footprint? Well to put it simply it is a measurement of impact our activities have on the environment, and in particular - climate change. It relates to the amount of green house gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation, etc. I found this great pie chart above to go along with this explanation. It is meant to show the typical carbon footprint left behind by an average individual in the developed world.

Scary thought isn't it? Think about all this nice weather we have been having... for JANUARY! Don't get me wrong, I love it when it's warm out... but I also live in Pennsylvania where by now it is supposed to be in the low 30s... not 60 degrees.

A carbon footprint is made up of the sum of two parts, the primary footprint (shown by the green slices of the pie chart) and the secondary footprint (shown by the yellow slices).

1. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including domestic energy consumption and transportation (e.g. car and plane). We have direct control of these.

2. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use - those associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown. To put it very simple - the more we buy, the more emissions will be caused on our behalf.

So, is global warming happening? You bet it is. To figure out your own carbon footprint here is a great "carbon footprint calculator" that I found on the internet...My Carbon Footprint.

Let's make it a point to reduce our individual carbon footprint while still understanding that a person needs to get to work, and a person will never stop being a consumer of products.
Here is a list of things you can do to help immediately:

- make it a point to turn it off.... lights, TV, DVD player, computer, etc. Anything not in use should not be on.
- turn down your central heat slightly (try 1 or 2 degrees to start). Just 1 degree will reduce your bill by about 8%.
- turn down the water heating setting (just 2 degrees will have an enormous positive impact).
- remember, there is no point heating the house after you have left for work.
- energy saving light bulbs!
- buy local produce... or even grow your own.
- reduce your consumption of meat (less consumers = less killing of animals)
- buy organic
- recycle as much as possible
- don't buy over packaged products
- shop locally, buy the RIGHT products.

Visit Get Healthy, located in Richboro PA or call our store at 215-355-5350 to find out what we do to help our planet thrive.

Because THIS is not the answer.

According to National Geographic News:

• Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) around the world since 1880, much of this in recent decades, according to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
• The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia, according to a number of climate studies. And the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that 11 of the past 12 years are among the dozen warmest since 1850.

The Daily Maintenance kit includes:
- Multi Vitamin & Mineral
- Pure DHA
- Probiotics with Colostrum
- Vitamin C

The Immune Support kit includes:
- Vitamin C
- Echinacea
- First Defense

Why should a child take Nutritional Supplements?

Studies from around the world show that modern farming methods have resulted in depleted soil conditions. Hence, the foods grown on that soil are lacking essential nutrients needed for healthy development, strong immune function and emotional and mental vitality.

Fast foods, junk foods, processed foods, poor dietary habits, and the picky appetites of many children also require nutritional supplements to correct and balance deficiencies.

The increase in exposure to toxic pollutants creates the need for extra immune defense and anti-oxidant protection for today's youth.

"The body and mind development during childhood create the foundation for the rest of your child's life." I love this quote because it is so true. What we do today effects tomorrow. Especially when it comes to our children. Teaching them to be healthy now plays a big role in how they will take care of themselves in the future years to come.

Daily supplementation of key vitamins, minerals and other nutrients may help and assist in filling these nutritional gaps.
